What we’ve done – Part 2

The Drive Behind Disability Golf

What we’ve done – Part 2

March saw 10 members go to Skegness North shore for the annual East Coast getaway. Normally it’s at Sandilands but due to unforeseen circumstances we had to change. We braved the cold winds for 3 days of great golf, food and company. Billy Lloyd was deemed best player over the 3 days. In 2015 we are back at Sandilands.

In April we held 2 events. Firstly, the Bondhay Charity Golf Day, where 15 teams entered on the great course near Worksop. The winners were I Helliwell, D Standing, L Ingram and N Roberts with 92 with D Mountford, J Holmes, J Irvine and K Petch with 83 in 2nd place. Nearest the Pins were S Tann and L Eccles with L Ingram hitting the longest drive. £345 was raised from the raffle making a massive for the event overall. Thanks must go to Corporate Golf Company and Grip Par for their continuing support.

The second event was the annual match against Halifax and Huddersfield Juniors, played at Ryburn golf club, high on the hills above Sowerby Bridge. The British Inclusive Golf team was A Gardner, J Holmes, D Mountford, J Riorden, M Oxley, R Brown, L Eccles, A Eccles, J Irvine, I Slowther, M Lee and T Fox. After losing 5 -1 in the previous year the organisers decided to use full handicap difference and it paid off with British Inclusive Golf reversing the score to win 5 -1. Thanks to Ryburn for hosting this growing match between 2 enthusiastic teams.

June saw us travel North to Roxburghe Golf and Country Club near Kelso to play the first ever GB PHEONIX CUP against the Scottish Dsiablity Golf Partmnership. We were represented by I Helliwell, P Weymes, J Irvine, I Slowther, K Pickering, B Lloyd, M Oxley, K Booth, A Stewart and D Standing. All the games were pairs to make sure that no individual was under pressure. On the first 2 days British Inclusive Golf came out on top 3 -2 but on the last day Scottish Dsiablity Golf Partmnership almost made a comeback but with the day ending 21/2 – 21/2 British Inclusive Golf ran out overall winners 81/2 to 61/2.

This event should be a goal for any British Inclusive Golf member to aim for, whether already playing golf or just starting out, as the team will be picked on who wishes to go not on who qualifies – its open to anyone and is tremendous fun.

July brought a mini Charity Golf Day at Longley park in Huddersfield. 12 teams entered with S Tann, M Clowery, T Smith and B Stacey coming out winners with 89 points. We raised £650 on the day.

August was the VANAMAN TROPHY at Bondhay Golf Club. 42 golfers played in this Annual event. The winner of the Vanaman Trophy (0 – 18 hcps) was Lewis Eccles, Copeland Trophy (19 – 36 Hcps) was won for the 2nd year running by Ian Helliwell. Both these trophies are for people with a disability but the POWAGLIDE CUP is contested by everyone in the field with Billy Keenan winning and Mick Galway in 2nd and Dave Standing 3rd. John Riorden won the Nearest the Pin.

September was the GRIP PAR OPEN played at Longley Park Golf club. This is a pairs competition open to anyone and it was won by a couple of local veterans C Waddington and G Holdsworth with a massive 52 pts. J Holmes and C Middleton were 2nd with 45 pts and last years winners I Slowther and A Shah were 3rd with 44 pts.

We would like to thank S Walsh of Grip Par who donated a signed flag from the 2014 British Open which raised a massive £656, Stuart has been supporting British Inclusive Golf since we were founded and are grateful for all his help.
